Where the metal is trading
Bullion and common coins ride the live market, so the number drifts as the day goes on. A genuine quantity of clean, familiar material earns a tighter price than a handful of leftovers.
How thin the year was struck
Scarcity is what lifts a coin above its melt. Years struck in small runs, or that few of survived, carry premiums that have nothing to do with what they weigh.
How it came through the years
Condition compounds scarcity. A slabbed coin turns up with that question already answered. A raw one we grade on the careful side, because a wrong call there is our risk to carry, not yours.
Same silver, different money
Two Morgan dollars can carry the exact same silver and be worth nothing near each other. One is a common year, worn, and sits close to its metal. The other came from a small mintage that rarely turns up, so collectors will pay a big multiple to own it. Put both on the scale together and only one of them is paid what it should be.

Should I clean the coins first?
No, and this is the mistake that empties pockets. Cleaning takes off the original surface collectors pay extra for, and it cannot be reversed. A coin that looks shinier to you often sells for a sliver of what it would have. Bring it all untouched.
How would I know if any of it is valuable?
It rests on metal content, the year and mint mark, the condition, and how many are left. None of that has to be settled in advance. Working it out is the appraisal itself, it is free, and the reasons behind each number get explained along the way.
